Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, one of the associated hospitals of Ganesh Shanker Vidhyarthi Memorial Medical college in Kanpur, reported 5 deaths within 24 hours.
Relatives of the patients who died have alleged that the air-conditioning system for the Intensive care Unit (ICU) had not been working since Wednesday.
It is reported that the ACs in the ICU had not been working since Wednesday and that the paramedical staff had even submitted a written complaint about it.
The hospital staff tried to provide relief to the patients by opening windows and doors of the ICU but relatives said it was not enough because of the intense heatwaves across the city.
As many as five patients died on Wednesday and Thursday, as the attendants had to depend on hand fans.
The hospital authorities stated that the five patients died due to chronic illness and non-functional air-conditioners.
ICU incharge Dr Saurabh Agarwal admitted that the ACs were not functioning but has refused allegations that the deaths happened due to it. He said the condition of the patients were serious and that the deaths occurred because of natural reasons.
Last year, as many as 42 kids had died in a span of 48 hours due to shortage of oxygen supply at Gorakhpur’s Baba Raghav Das Medical College, the Lok Sabha constituency of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
